Rock Walls On This Modern Home Help Maintain Its Connection To The Natural Setting

Vetter Architects has designed a modern guest house on the shores of Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin, that showcases rough-cut fieldstone and large windows overlooking the lake.

Surrounded by a forest of oaks and white pines, the home is perched on a bluff overlooking a pristine lake the family has been visiting for generations.

Let’s take a look around…

The Exterior

Glass, wood, and stone are seamlessly woven together from inside to out, as they reference the primary building materials found in Wisconsin’s scenic Northwoods. Rough-cut fieldstone set in thick, hand-troweled mortar stretches across the exterior’s south facade and connects with the interior two-story central fireplace.

The lakefront side of the home has large windows that span the entire exterior, filling the interior with natural light, and allowing the views of the lake and the boathouse below to be enjoyed.

Pool Suites at the Hard Rock Hotel Las Vegas by Chemical Spaces

As part of the remodel for the Hard Rock Las Vegas Hotel & Casino, design firm Chemical Spaces was commissioned to design several one-of-a-kind pool suites intended to accommodate VIP guests of the resort. Local designer Mark Tracy, Chemical Spaces’ owner and principal design consultant, designed and oversaw installation of the individual suites.

The suites were designed with the intent to cater to Hard Rock’s young, hip, and music-oriented guests. With each suite boasting a unique theme/motif, the suites each walk out to the newly-designed Hard Rock pool and bring a new element to the Hard Rock resort.

MIAMI BLUE SUITE

The intent of this design was to create a party suite with a modern, airy, Miami feel. The primary feature is a giant Cshaped bed lined with blue, imported Italian tile. LED rope lighting and mirrored toe-kicks beneath the bed create the illusion that the bed floats above the floor. Laid-out like a party lounge, a solid-surface DJ table in “Milk Glass” foregrounds the second most noticeable feature: a wall of turntables and jam boxes framed in LED-lit alcoves. Additional features include custom-designed minimalist furniture, a custom, color-matched rug produced in Sweden, floor-to-ceiling sheers, sconce lighting, and mirrored ceiling niches. The primary challenge was a demanding timeline, having been hired late in the construction process.

.

GORILLA SUITE

The design concept of this suite was to create a dark twisted take on a library/cigar bar. The design features Wenge wall paneling cut into custom shapes and divided with silver, metal striping. The metallic-silver porcelain wall tile contrasts with the rich hardwood floors and gives the suite a modern feel—but the bronze mirrored ceiling, croc-skin custom furniture, and giant hand-painted wall murals of girls and gorilla make this a distinctly dark, savage, sexy urban jungle.

.

PUNK ROCK SUITE

The intent of the Punk Rock Suite was to create a London-style, punk rock party suite. Bands of recessed mirrors and hand-painted lines in every direction, hand-painted wall murals, and spot lighting on the walls and ceiling pack the room with movement and action. Stone-like grey wall tiles, black hardwood floors, custom modern furniture and a custom, hand-made Union Jack rug complete the London underground feel.

.

TREE LINE SUITE

The concept of this design began with the concept of creating a hotel room with the illusion of a two-story tree line in the center. Starting from this feature, the hand-picked colors of tree branches were the basis for the color scheme for the rest of the room. Hardwood floors complement the nature motif. Cream walls of textured tiled anchor each side of the room. To create contrast and clarify that this space is still a party suite, a rich blue band spanning from wall, to ceiling, to wall, divides the room down the center. The blue mural features hand-painted smoke in dark blue, leaves and skulls in metallic gold, and LED rope lighting to illuminate the art.

Project description

The hotel has 163 rooms and suites, a restaurant, “Rock Shop”, “Rock Spa”, lobby bar and a nightclub. The spa opens next month and the nightclub is slated for fall 2014. The original hotel was built in the late 70’s and came complete with a sunken living room in the lobby…score.

In keeping with the vibe of Palm Springs and mindful of the Coachella music and art festival, we sought to create a Hard Rock Hotel experience that dovetailed with those two dynamics

To that end we selected memorabilia from younger artists as well as odd items from more established acts, hence the “Fun” sign from the band Fun.

A Fun Kids Bedroom With A Loft Bed And Rock Climbing Wall

Walker Warner Architects together with interior designer Nicole Hollis completed a modern house in California, and included as part of the interior, is a fun kids bedroom.

The bedroom features a loft bed that hangs from the ceiling and is attached to the wall. A custom ladder creates a sturdy way of climbing up to the bed.

Adjacent to the bed is a mini basketball hoop, a secondary lofted area for relaxing, as well as a rock climbing wall and a desk. By having the bed lofted, it creates an open play space on the floor, that’s been furnished with a soft rug and a bean bag.

11 Inspirational Rock Gardens To Get You Planning Your Garden

Rock gardens are great for when you have water restrictions or don

Watering the grass and plants all throughout the warm season, which in some places is year ’round, can be a huge hassle. There are usually water restrictions, which can lead to brown spots on grass and dead plants, which then leads to having to take out the dead plants and replant new ones, and the cycle continues.

With rock gardens, however, the need to water almost entirely goes away and the few plants you do have are much more likely to survive a drought should one occur.

Here are 11 examples of rock gardens and the various ways they can be styled.

1. This rock garden in Seattle has plants that will tolerate heavy rain in the fall and winter, but will also do well as long as they’re given a little water during the dryer summer months.

Caterina Moretti Has Designed Furniture Made From Volcanic Rock

Caterina Moretti Has Designed Furniture Made From Volcanic Rock

Mexican-based designer and studio director Caterina Moretti of Peca, has designed a collection of sculptural furniture pieces made from volcanic rock.

The monolithic collection, titled ‘LOTO Roca’, includes two side tables, which can also be used as stools, that both have a textured black appearance.

The designs, which are created in two different heights/widths, are hand-carved with a chisel and hammer from a single piece of volcanic rock.

Here are several photos that show a glimpse of how the furniture pieces were made by local artisans.
