A Seating Nook Under The Stairs Offers A Quiet Place To Read In This Home

Los Angeles designer and architect Rob Diaz has completed his latest project, the contemporary renovation of a home in Sherman Oaks, California, and included in the updated interior, is a built-in seating nook.

The wood-lined seating nook is located under the stairs and adjacent to the living room.

The seating nook includes a large white textured cushion as well as some smaller pillows, two shelving niches, and lighting. Underneath the seating, there's four hardware-free drawers, ideal for storing blankets and games.

From this angle, which also shows the design of the stairs, you can see how neatly the seating nook and storage are tucked away into the available space.

Let’s take a look around the rest of the house…

The Exterior

The design goals for the home were to incorporate a blend of European influences with a relaxed, understated elegance evocative of Southern California living. The front of the home features a low-maintenance garden with a small designated area for seating.

Architecture firm Proctor & Shaw has completed the interior renovation of an apartment in London.

The renovation included re-configuring the inefficient existing one bedroom one bathroom layout, to incorporate two double bedrooms each with ensuite facilities, along with a generous open plan kitchen, dining, and living space.

Upon entering the apartment, it’s immediately apparent that a wood slat wall is the focal point of the interior.

The open plan layout of the living room, dining area, and kitchen, provides plenty of space for entertaining, while the bedrooms and bathrooms are hidden behind the full-height wood wall.

The main living space is anchored at each end with bespoke wall to wall furniture units in ultra-matt, clear sealed, dark grey through-coloured MDF, topped with black pitted bespoke concrete worktops.

Yevgenia Shilova and Ilya Eroshevich of architecture and interior design firm Design Rocks have recently completed an apartment that includes an indoor plant room.

Located just off the dining room and highlighted by the black-framed glass wall with a door, the garden provides a place of calm within the modern interior.

The Fieldhouse Is A Gathering Place For Friends And Family

The Fieldhouse Is A Gathering Place For Friends And Family

Seattle-based architecture firm Hoedemaker Pfeiffer has designed The Fieldhouse, a building that’s designated for family and friends to gather on an island property in Washington State.

The garden pavilion draws inspiration from the Pacific Northwest, local materials, and the vernacular stone and timber structures built across the country in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

A modern garden pavilion made from stone, wood, and glass.

The large structure, with a single-plane shed roof, has an covered outdoor patio that’s flanked by two offset and enclosed spaces.

The material palette includes Douglas fir and cedar harvested and salvaged from the Pacific Northwest, stone from a quarry on nearby Vancouver Island, and early, factory-style steel casement doors and windows, which are West Coast built.

This Writer’s Studio Was Designed As A Place Of Solitude

Architect Eric J. Smith has designed a small writer’s studio that’s located in Connecticut and is home to a 1,700 volume collection of poetry.

The studio is a place where its owner can write and read poetry as well as escape from aspects of modern life. It can also be used to meditate among tall oaks, observe wildlife, and reflect on philosophical and artistic ideas.

Set away from the main house, the 650-square foot studio is clad in fieldstone and bluestone, and constructed to resemble a historic dry-stacked, mass stone wall. To keep it at a nice temperature, there’s geothermal heating and a cooling system.

Inside, there’s running water and electricity that allow for a tiny kitchen area with a small fridge, coffee pot and sink. No Good Place For A TV, So They Installed A Screen That Drops Down From The Ceiling

Architecture and interior design firm mode:lina has completed an apartment in Poznan, Poland, where instead of mounting a TV on a wall, they installed a drop-down projector screen.

The layout of the living room has been kept open to the dining room and kitchen. As a result, the sofa is located in the corner, making it difficult to have a wall-mounted TV or entertainment unit.

Instead, the designers took advantage of the space in the ceiling, and installed a drop down projector screen, that can be easily seen from the sofa. When it’s not in use, it retracts into the ceiling, and unless you were looking for it, you would probably not even realize it’s there.
