The Modern White Minimalist Exterior Of This Home Is Softened By The Pastel Design Elements Throughout The Interior

NOMO STUDIO has designed a modern home with a white exterior that sits on a gently sloping site located in Coves Noves, a neighborhood on the north-east coast of Minorca in Spain.

A modern white home with an angular design.

The ‘Patio House’ was designed to intentionally direct the views in specific directions, due to the location of the neighbors and a nearby hotel, and also take into account the sun orientation and wind protection.

The exterior of the home takes strong references from local fisherman’s architecture with whitewashed walls and navy blue or deep green shutters.

The large scale of the perforated aluminum sliders, finished in a pastel turquoise, gives the composition a clear contemporary character, as well providing a way to block the sun during daytime and secure the house when it is closed for the season.

Only a few elements, such as the pool, the stair railing, or the kitchen furniture, break the all white tones by introducing small turquoise details that link back to the shutters outside.

How-to mix contemporary interior design with elements of Japanese culture

How-to mix contemporary interior design with elements of Japanese culture

The hotel suites at the new Aman Tokyo are a delightful lesson on how to combine contemporary interior design with the flavor of traditional Japanese design to create a warm and welcoming space.

Often Japanese design can be seen as very minimalist in its design, with bare rooms, white or concrete walls and minimal furniture, but these hotel suites at the new Aman Tokyo, show that Japanese design can also be warm and welcoming.

The suites have a simple color palette where we see white, wood, and a dark grey/black found throughout. Meanwhile, sliding shoji screens, a standard element of traditional Japanese interior design, stretch from one end of the suite to the other.

Custom-made furniture like white oak coffee tables, sofas and armchairs with neutral fabric tones, add to the authentic design of this Japanese hotel suite.

The bathrooms follow the design of traditional Japanese baths, with charcoal-colored basalt stone tiles which draw the eye across the room to the private onsen with floor-to-ceiling windows.

8 Elements To Include When Designing Your Zen Garden

8 Elements To Include When Designing Your Zen Garden

Designed by Studio H Landscape Architecture in collaboration with QS Landscape is this modern zen garden that exemplifies many of the elements typically found in this type of outdoor space.

Attention to detail and use of elements that make for a low maintenance and beautifully relaxing space have turned this backyard into a relaxing oasis perfect for entertaining, meditating, or just some peace and quiet.

Let’s take a closer look at the garden and each of the elements that work together to create a calm and soothing environment.

1. Japanese Rock Garden

In order to have a properly zen garden, a Japanese rock garden is crucial. Created to emulate the intricacies of nature and to help with mediation in temples, rock gardens add an element of peace and tranquility to your yard and zen garden.

4. A Seating Area

Gardens, including zen gardens, are the perfect place to gather with friends and family. Make sure you have comfortable seating with some sun protection to provide you and your guests with a place to sit and enjoy the beauty and calmness of your zen garden.

5. Pavers

One of the nice things about zen gardens and all of their different elements is the fact that it creates a little oasis, perfect for wandering through to help calm you down or relax you. But you don’t want to be walking all over your carefully maintained garden, so to avoid that, include pavers in your design to allow you the pleasure of wandering through your garden without trampling your plants.

6. Grass (in this case artificial grass)

To have a truly low maintenance zen garden, artificial grass was used instead of real grass when designing the space. Plus with the many water restrictions that California has in place, it made sense for them to use it for this garden.  Let’s not forget that there are benefits to using artificial grass, like not having to mow it or look after it, maybe picking up a leaf or two will be all you have to do.

7. Ambient Lighting

What good is a garden if you can only enjoy it when the sun is shining? Give yourself the possibility of enjoying a few peaceful moments out in the garden after the sun has gone down by installing some soft outdoor lighting. The shadows created by the lights transform your zen garden into a whole new environment and lets you appreciate your design in a whole new light.

8. Include Wood

Including wood in your zen garden design helps to give the space a more natural feel. A wood privacy screen and a wood deck, like in this garden, warm up the environment and make it feel more calming while also providing you with privacy and an entertainment space.
