Concrete Blocks Were Used To Create A Modern Facade For This New Home In The Desert

Architecture firm The Ranch Mine was commissioned to design a house for a family in Phoenix, Arizona, that wanted to build a home on a vacant lot.

The lot had a mountain view but came with a concave property line that narrowed the allowable building depth in the middle of the long lot to just 20 feet, presenting an interesting design challenge.

Let’s take a look around…

The Facade

One of the key design elements of the home is the use of concrete blocks (cinder blocks), that have been used for a variety of areas, such as the facade. The concrete blocks are used for the walls of the house and the low fence surrounding a front porch.

The Front Porch With Outdoor Fire

The semi-public front porch furnished with a fire pit and seating projects out from the front of the house to take advantage of the mountain views.

The Sliding Opaque Doors

Pocketing glass doors of the great room open the interior space up to the rear covered patio that frames the same view to be enjoyed while living outdoors.

The Covered Outdoor Patio

The rear covered patio can be accessed through 3 different pocketing glass doors, as well as a custom, modern take on a dutch door. The patio features a large sweeping tilted roof, known as “Big Top”, which is a nod to the idea that family life can often feel like a circus under one roof.

The patio includes a fireplace that is also used for cooking, built-in benches that flank the fireplace, an outdoor kitchen and dining area, a lounge area, and a customized screen with their family emblem.

A Resort Designed To Blend Into The Desert Landscape

The Amangiri Resort and Spa, located on a 600+ acre site in southern Utah, is a collaboration between three architects: Marwan Al-Sayed, Wendell Burnette and Rick Joy.

The three architects were inspired to work together on the awe-inspiring site, to create a bold yet responsive settlement that both honors and celebrates the magic and mystery of southern Utah’s majestic cliffs and rock formations.

About the resort

Amangiri is located on 243 hectares (600 acres) in Canyon Point, Southern Utah, close to the border with Arizona. The resort is tucked into a protected valley with sweeping views over colourful, stratified rock towards the Grand Staircase – Escalante National Monument. The resort is a 25-minute drive from the nearest town of Page, Arizona and a 15-minute drive to the shores of Lake Powell.

The Amangiri Resort and Spa, Utah

Architecturally, the resort has been designed to blend into the landscape with natural hues, materials and textures a feature of the design. The structures are commanding and in proportion with the scale of the natural surroundings, yet provide an intimate setting from which to view and appreciate the landscape.

Two accommodation wings lead from the Pavilion into the desert: 17 suites are located within the North Wing and another 17 suites together with the Aman Spa are located within the South Wing. Outward views from the resort look over the untouched valley surrounded by lofty bluffs.

The Amangiri Resort and Spa, Utah

Amangiri offers 34 suites in total: 13 Desert View Suites, 14 Mesa View Suites, one Terrace Suite, two Pool Suites, two Terrace Pool Suites, the Girijaala Suite and the Amangiri Suite.

A Shipping Container House Makes The California Desert Its Home

A Shipping Container House Makes The California Desert Its Home

As shipping container homes have become a growing trend, today we’re taking a look at this house that designer Ben Uyeda has built in the desert landscape of Joshua Tree, California.

The house is made up of three shipping containers of different sizes. The first includes the living room, kitchen, and main bedroom with a bathroom. The second includes a guest bedroom with a bathroom, and the third is currently used for storage, but in the future, it can be transformed into another bedroom or an office.

A modern shipping container house that's made from three separate containers and is painted dark grey.

Taking a look at the interior of the shipping container house, we see the color palette has been kept bright and white with wood accents, and the furniture has been kept to a minimum as the width of the container is just 7 feet wide. To make the interior feel larger, there’s bi-folding doors on either side of the living room that open up to wood decks.

Each of the bathrooms, in the main container and the guest suite container, has either a shower or shower/bath combination, a toilet, and a vanity area.

The bedrooms, like the one seen below, both have a full-size bed and a picture window that perfectly frames the views outside.
